Iron Gate (Demir Kapija) is a small town in Macedonia on a location of former settlement from Neolithic Age.
Demir Kapija was fortified by walls from around 3000 years ago. It was settled by the Paeonians, Ancient Macedonians, Romans, Early Christians, Byzantines, Slavs, Samuil State and the Ottomans, who gave the modern name of the town due to the solid rock mountains which enclose river Vardar from the both sides. It was called Stenae (Solid Rocks) in the Classical Period and it was used by the Macedonians around 450 BC as an important control point. Slavs called it Prosek.
The local population produces quality grapes and Demir Kapija is famous for production of prestigious authentic Macedonian wines. There is impressive Valey of Cactuses on the south of Demir Kapija, where wild cactuses grow themselves and astonish the people like a miracle.
